Jordan Campbell has ripped into the ‘play acting’ and ‘time wasting’ of Sevilla in their 1-0 win away at Glasgow Rangers U19s on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lowdown: Defeat
The Young Gers were unfortunately knocked out of the UEFA Youth League at Dumbarton at the round of 32 stage, as a goal from Sevilla youngster Carlos Alvarez early in the second half was enough to send the Spaniards through.
David McCallum named 18-year-old Alex Lowry among the starters, a player who has already featured for the senior side this season, and also managed to score in the 4-0 win against Stirling Albion in the SFA cup (Transfermarkt).
And Rangers News believed Lowry was the standout performer, while they also criticised the state of the ‘home’ pitch at Dumbarton.
The Latest: Campbell reacts
Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Campbell was far from happy with what he saw from Sevilla, heavily criticising their ‘play acting’ and ‘time wasting’ in particular:
“Sevilla’s play acting is genuinely past a joke.
“Mourinho would even blush at some of this time wasting.”
The Verdict: An ugly affair
The play acting and time wasting tactics, whilst effective in getting the result for Sevilla, are not in the spirit of the game, and added more fuel to the fire in a match that was full of conflict and tension.
Both Alvarez and Juan Barroso picked up late yellow cards, while Marcelo Exposito Jimenez was shown red, suggesting that they were happy to continuously foul the Teddy Bears in order to run down the clock – the bobbly pitch did no one any favours as late tackles were flying in either.
Nonetheless, it was no doubt a frustrating afternoon for the Light Blues, who had chances to win the match, but will now have to focus solely on domestic affairs.
