Aston Villa have shown over recent years just how ambitious they are when it comes to signing big-name players from fellow English clubs, such as Danny Ings, Emi Buendia, Lucas Digne and Emi Martinez to name a few.
With the next summer transfer window on the horizon, it seems as though the Midlands club could be setting their sights on bringing another Premier League star to Villa Park to strengthen their squad.
What’s the news?
According to a recent report from The Sun, Villa are monitoring Paul Pogba’s situation at Manchester United alongside the likes of Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, plus fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.
The Frenchman rejoined the Manchester club back in 2016 in a deal worth a then world-record fee of £89m from Juventus.
With 16 Premier League appearances under his belt so far this season, the 29-year-old – who is currently picking up £290k-per-week according to Salary Sport – has scored one goal and provided an impressive total of nine assists, the fourth-highest of any player in the English top flight, illustrating his attacking threat from a midfield position.
Also, having made more live-ball passes (10) which have led to a goal than any other player in Ralf Rangnick’s squad, this highlights how creative the midfield maestro is and how much of a danger he can be with his passing abilities.
Imagine him and Watkins
Taking into account how current Villa striker Ollie Watkins has gone through periods of the campaign where he hasn’t been able to find the net, perhaps having someone like Pogba behind him could help the Englishman to score on a more consistent basis if the former Juventus star is able to provide plenty of goalscoring opportunities, as he has done for United this season.
With all this in mind, if United are willing to negotiate a deal to sell Pogba, who was described as “so strong” by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it is definitely something that Villa and Johan Lange should explore this summer.
Having won numerous trophies throughout his career at club and international level, and with plenty of experience playing at a high level in Europe, his potential arrival could raise the roof at Villa Park. It truly highlights the club’s ambitions of where they want to be and what calibre of player they want in the Midlands.
