Jan Vertonghen is confident he is fit to play in this weekend’s north London derby against Arsenal, per The Daily Telegraph.
What’s the word?
The Belgium international has not played this season.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has instead partnered Davinson Sanchez with Toby Alderweireld for the first three games of the campaign, in which Spurs beat Aston Villa, drew with Manchester City and lost to Newcastle United.
The 32-year-old was not even included in the squad for the game against Villa, while he was on the bench in the latter two encounters.
The report states that Vertonghen believes he is fit enough to play versus the Gunners, though he is understood to have been left out of the first three games because of concerns over his fitness in pre-season.
No excuse
There is absolutely no reason for Pochettino not to select Vertonghen this weekend.
If he believes he is fit, he should be playing, particularly after the club’s terrible defending against the Magpies.
Indeed, both Sanchez and left-back Danny Rose were at fault for Joelinton’s goal in north London.

Against the pace of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe at The Emirates, the club can ill-afford Sanchez’s poor discipline.
Bringing Vertonghen back into the fold, and restoring the partnership that he has forged with Alderweireld, would add far more solidity to the club’s backline and, really, is a no-brainer.
