Bellingham finished third in the voting for the award and saw Real Madrid team-mate Vinicius Junior scoop the top prize ahead of Rodri. Kane was handed a vote, as England captain, and opted not to make Bellingham his top choice. Instead the Bayern Munich striker voted Rodri as his number one, following by Bellingham and then Vinicius. Bellingham did get former England interim manager Lee Carsley's vote, however, as he went for the Real Madrid star ahead of Rodri and Lamine Yamal.

Bellingham may have missed out on the trophy but he did say ahead of the awards ceremony at a press conference that Vinicius "deserves" it and that he would be "very happy" if the Brazilian was named The Best. Both men played crucial roles in Real Madrid's success last season, as Carlo Ancelotti's side won La Liga and the Champions League.

As well as missing out on The Best, Bellingham was also denied BBC Sports Personality of the Year glory. The Real Madrid star was one of the six nominees but didn't even make the top three as Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson was declared the winner ahead of darts sensation Luke Littler and England cricketer Joe Root.
